The emerald ash borer is an invasive species of beetle that kills our native ash trees. It is moving from east to west across the United States and has currently been identified in 6 different counties in eastern South Dakota. Once it makes it way to the black hills, it will kill all of our ash trees unless you decide to treat the tree. Treatment does not need to be started until the beetle has been confirmed in your county and it will need to be done every 2-3 years indefinitely for the trees life. Until then, we advise homeowners and business to begin removing any unhealthy ash trees.
Generally, a tree requires 10 gallons of water per inch of diameter of tree trunk once a week. This needs to be done in an area 2/3rds the height of the tree, which is what we call the critical root zone. Trees prefer infrequent but deep watering.

Ideally, the best time to trim trees is in the winter time once the tree is dormant. A general rule of thumb is to not take more than 20% of the canopy at one time, especially for large mature trees. However, if we are just removing dead material out of a tree, then that can be done at anytime of the year. There are a few types of trimming that are more time specific, especially with fruit trees and newly planted trees. Give us a call and we can discuss your specific needs.
